This altarpiece’s openly stated model is the Assumption in the Duomo Vecchio in Brescia painted by Moroni’s master Moretto. The image, split into two parts, relies for its effect on a chilly, ashen background enlivened shimmering pinks and blues of the figures’ attire. The group of apostles, varied in their features and poses, offers the painter a chance to display the skill as a portraitist for which he is universally celebrated.
