This altarpiece was commissioned by Ottaviano Vimercati for the Chapel of St. Catherine in the church of San Pietro in Crema, where he had asked to be buried. The patron and his wife are shown in the traditional donor’s pose, portrayed in profile and introduced by their respective patron saints to the mystic vision of the Risen Christ, who stands out starkly against the sky. Domitilla was the mother of Febo da Brescia, whose admirable portrait by Lorenzo Lotto hangs in Room XIX.
