Eighth dialogue “Around the Supper at Emmaus. Caravaggio meets Rembrandt”

February 5, 2019 to February 24, 2019
Attorno alla Cena in Emmaus. Caravaggio incontra Rembrandt

Comparison of masterpieces by two masters of light

From February 5 to February 24, 2019, the Pinacoteca di Brera is hosting an exciting new dialogue, Around the Supper at Emmaus. Caravaggio Meets Rembrandt, which compares two absolute masterpieces of art history: Caravaggio’s Supper at Emmaus, one of the museum’s most significant works, and Rembrandt’s The Pilgrims’ Supper at Emmaus, an extraordinary painting by the Dutch master from the Musée Jacquemart-André in Paris.

The Supper in Emmaus returns to Milan after being shown at the Paris exhibition Caravage à Rome. Amis et ennemis, at the Musée Jacquemart-André from September 21, 2018 to January 28, 2019. The exchange between the two dinners, the result of an agreement between the two institutions, had seen Rembrandt’s painting temporarily take Caravaggio’s place, while now it will be possible to exceptionally admire them together for the first time in room XXVIII in an unprecedented and spectacular dialogue, Room VIII, the first after the complete renovation of the rooms of the Pinacoteca di Brera.
It will thus be a never-before-seen comparison between two paintings of identical inspiration in the executions of two masters of light.
