Veronese painted numerous banquets with scenes from the Gospels. Mary Magdalene may be anointing Christ’s feet on the far left but the entire scene is secular in its tone, in its setting and in its 16th century costumes. What the painter is actually showing us here is the life in his own day, which he illustrates in a very lively and anecdotal fashion: servants bustle, dogs fight with a cat over scraps of food, a servant on the right steals wine from the table and a drunk is carried out of the dining hall.
