Originally from Danzig and specialising in portraits, this painter is recorded in Lombardy and his work, with its distant echo of Rembrandt’s style, is crucial to gain an understanding of Lombard portraiture at the time and of Fra’ Galgario’s art. Mentioned in flattering terms by 18th century biographer Francesco Maria Tassi in his Vite de’ pittori, scultori e architetti bergamaschi, he is referred to in documents as “Cavalier Salomon”.
