Traballesi shows himself clutching his brushes and palette, a conventional pose favoured by painters for their self-portraits. The picture, a rare easel painting by this artist better known for his fresco work, was in the Brera’s “Cabinet of Painters’ Portraits” established by Giuseppe Bossi to hold up certain symbolic figures in the history of Lombard art as illustrious models and shining examples for the Accademia’s students.
