This study has been variously attributed to both Giambattista Tiepolo and his son Giandomenico. The prevailing view is that it is an early study by Giandomenico – and in any case different from the finished work – for a battle in the fresco cycle he painted in the church of Santi Faustino e Giovita in Brescia in 1754–5.
