The painting was purchased in London for 2,500 pounds by Ettore Modigliani in 1933 with proceeds from the Exhibition of Ancient Italian Art (1930) and a contribution from the Amici di Brera association.

The work depicts Sir Richard Hely Hutchinson, the Baron of Donoughmore, who lived from 1756 to 1825 and served as a member of the Irish Parliament—a role highlighted in the painting by the detail of his red Irish Army uniform.
