This portrait, signed in the upper left-hand corner, is one of Lotto’s most intense works in terms both of its execution and of its psychological depth. The sitter’s identity is uncertain but it may be Liberale da Pinedel whose portrait, according to the artist’s Account Book, was painted with those of Febo da Brescia and Laura da Pola during his second spell in Treviso. Setting aside the bright colours and symbolic allusions of his earlier portraits, Lotto opts here for a simplified composition inspired by Titian.
