It was one of the five Flemish paintings sent to Brera in 1813 in exchange for several works taken from Milan by Napoleon. This painting was, for a long time, considered to be autograph, and the young woman was identified as the artist’s sister. However, the Corpus of Rembrandt’s Painting (1986) has rejected the artist’s authorship of this painting, which is thought to have been executed by a Rembrandt’s follower.
