The sitter’s sharp features, pronounced cheekbones, red ear, thin moustache, restless gaze and costume veering imperceptibly from black to grey with a few touches of white all conspire to make this painting a rare example of Tanzio’s exceptional skill as a portrait artist and highlight his acute psychological exploration of his sitters.
