Marianna, the daughter of renowned vedutista Luca Carlevarijs, trained with her father but also in the home of Rosalba Carriera, a focal point for women involved in the art world in the Venice of the day. This pastel, formerly attributed to Rosalba herself, has been reassigned to Marianna on the strength of its kinship with her few known works – including portraits (now in Ca’ Rezzonico) of the Balbi family, with whom she may have had especially close ties.
