This painting, signed on the base of the throne, entered the Brera after the confiscation of the assets from the Capuchin Friars’ church in Amandola near Ascoli Piceno. Its original location is uncertain but it was probably commissioned by Pope Urban VIII’s brother Cardinal Antonio Barberini, a member of the order and bishop of Senigallia until 1629. The rich composition devised by Pietro da Cortona, who enjoyed the papal family’s protection, displays the innovative charge of his painting in the Baroque style.
