This is another youthful work associated with an important patron, the Secretarius of Francesco II Sforza and an important figure at the court of Emperor Charles V. This may be why it sets out to be deliberately modern, with an explicit echo of the Madonna that Raphael painted for San Sisto in Piacenza in the motif of the Virgin appearing beyond a curtain. The artist’s bright palette is inspired by Pordenone and he displays a virtuoso skill in capturing the brightness of Catherine’s tunic with which to dazzle the observer.
