This painting came to the Brera from the Louvre along with another four Flemish paintings in exchange for work by 15th and 16th century Lombard and Venetian painters. The Madonna is likely to have been painted during Van Dyck’s second period of residence in Verona because its style harks back to Italian, especially Venetian, Renaissance art, the Virgin’s pose and features clearly echoing the work of Titian.
