Labels by famous authors dedicated to women

“No-one knows the identity of this young female musician. But Bartolomeo Veneto’s painting was so popular that over 20 copies were made. The visual clues are confusing: the tilt of her head, the direct gaze suggests a courtesan, women who entertained clients with music. Other versions give her a halo (St Cecilia was patron saint of music). Whatever her status, her self-assurance invites us into a world where women as music makers, players and singers, was becoming acceptable. The journey to the stage had begun.”
