As we can see from the rapidly executed brushwork, this is a study for a painting illustrating a story in Livy, who tells us that when Hannibal was nine years old, he swore an oath of eternal hatred against the Romans, who had been cursed by Dido. The theme testifies to the artist’s interest in historical painting. Pittoni sets his figures on a stage enclosed by an architectural stage set.
