This painting, probably an allegory of Water, is remarkable for the exaggerated mimicry that was such a feature of the conventional depiction of the poorer classes. Against the backdrop of a hilly landscape by a river in which people are fishing, a family of fishmongers goes about its daily business; a girl places another catch on the stall while a man and a woman eat at a small table, ignoring the yelping of a boy who has been pinched by a prawn.
