This picture, recently acquired by the Pinacoteca, is by Luca Carlevarijs, a painter and engraver from Friuli who moved to Venice to work in the field of vedutismo. It shows the Ponte Emilio, an ancient Roman bridge swept away by the raging Tiber in 1598 and known as the “Ponte Rotto” or “Broken Bridge” ever since. A capriccio is an imaginary landscape popular in the 18th century that merges credibility with invention.
