Gabriel announces the birth of Christ to Mary, but he is not alone. Above the pair we see numerous angles and the Archangels Jehudiel and Barachiel kneeling, The unusual scene is based on the Apocalypsis Nova, a work circulating at a time of renewal in the Church supported by the King of France, who had conquered Milan. In the background, The Fall of Man and Adam and Eve Expelled from Paradise based on engravings by Dürer remind us that Jesus was born to redeem that sin.

“If we could cross centuries and actually meet Mary, she would seem quite ordinary. Yet she has the ability to respond to God’s call, like Abraham, the founder of Judaism, who left his birthplace and his father’s house. Both are summoned to walk a new path, filled with faith and hope. It’s no small matter to be addressed by an angel of God, or surrounded by thirteen angels. Her trembling hands make us wonder if she were fully ready to become this heroine of the ordinary life lived in the presence of God.”
