Set against a deep landscape, the Virgin gazes out at the observer while Jesus looks into the distance, thinking of the salvation he must bring mankind as a new Adam (whence the apple). The Virgin’s posture and the palette are inspired by Leonardo but the composition and facial features are influenced by Raphael, either directly or through Cesare da Sesto. Giampietrino often painted variants and replicas of his work and the several versions of this work point to its popularity.
