The two pictures (this one and the Transport of the Ark of the Covenant) once attributed to Luca Giordano, have now been identified as preparatory studies for Nicola Malinconico’s altarpieces for the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Bergamo – one of his most important commissions, in which he replaced his master Luca Giordano on the latter’s move to Spain. The artist’s gobetween was Venetian art dealer Simone Giugalli.
Malinconico worked in Bergamo from June 1693 to May 1694.
