This painter of Ligurian origin who lived in Milan for a long time shunned the Genoese tradition of stiff, obsequious portraiture influenced by Rubens’ and Van Dyck’s work, turning instead to the Lombard style – thus recording his sitters’ true features rather than seeking to flatter them, where the celebratory portrait tended to correct any irregularities and to emphasise the sitter’s luxurious attire.
