In the year the Pinacoteca di Brera was established, the artist responsible portrayed himself with friends with whom he shared cultural interests and ideas. Bossi is on the far left while Gaetano Cattaneo, the curator of Brera’s Gabinetto Numismatico, is in shadow in the centre. Greek scholar Felice Bellotti is in the left foreground and the poet Carlo Porta is on the right. The restrained palette based on dull browns and textured whites serves to underscore the young intellectuals’ proud, alert gazes.
