The work comes from the cappella Filippini in the monastery Church of San Francesco in Arcevia (Ancona). It was acquired in 1811 through the requisitions under Napoleon. As the inscriptions read, it was commissioned in 1507 by Giacomo di Simone Filippini to Luca Signorelli, who was working there at that time. The painting shows the Madonna and Child enthroned. Next to them on the left is Saint James the Greater with a cane and a book, while on the right is Saint Francis also with a book. On the step below the altar is Saint Simon, browsing a book, and Saint Bonaventura, with a scarlet hat on his feet and a book in his hands.
