This portrait of an artist shown in a three-quarter pose while working is typical of 16th-century painting. In the bust of an old man with a flowing beard on which the sculptor is working with his hammer and chisel, Crespi shows that he owes a debt to Camillo and Giulio Cesare Procaccini as well as to Rubens.
