16th century painter and critic Lomazzo lists the figures’ names, which were obviously inscribed alongside each one. They were not the ancient heroes so often portrayed in aristocratic homes. Though disguised and transfigured by Classical attire and armour, they were famous contemporary swordsmen and warriors. This tells us that their differentiated features were portraits and suggests that the popular “valiant hero” theme was addressed here with a touch of irony.
