This painting was probably part of a larger whole and is signed by a painter of whom we know no other work, and could possibly be attributed to Giorgio Schiavone, a painter active in Padua. Extraordinarily, the work already has a clear three-dimensionality that recalls the young Andrea Mantegna – you almost can see the veins throb under the skin of the saint. It is recognised as St. Mark by the words Pax tibi Marce Evangelista meus on the roll and by the inscription San Marcus Evangelista.
