Vase with a Classical Scene

Manifattura di Volterra

This pair of monumental vases once graced the Palazzo Reale in Milan. The primarily decorative function of these pieces ism underscored by the richness of their ornamental motifs, acanthus leaves and tendrils alternating with garlands of roses, vine shoots and bunches of grapes. The mythological scene is less easy to interpret. The vases bear a marked resemblance to a similar pair attributed to purist sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini now in the Pitti Palace in Florence, which were purchased by Grand Duke Ferdinando III of the House of Lorraine for the Audience Hall in 1824.
