Michelangelo Anselmi was probably born in Lucca after his father was exiled from Parma on a charge of murder. He moved Parma some time before 1520, achieving renown as a painter and working with Correggio and Parmigianino. This painting comes from the Chapel of the Conception in the church of San Francesco in Parma, which Anselmi frescoed from 1532 to 1534. St. Jerome, seated on a rock, turns to St. Catherine as she adores the Crucifix.
