This picture and its companion piece, St. Cecilia, reveal the same skill on the artist’s part in placing his figures in a confined space. The two paintings are a product of Procaccini’s maturity, a period represented in the Pinacoteca di Brera by fully fifteen paintings – a far higher number than those of any other 17th century painter actrive in Lombardy; and this, despite the fact that Brera is rich in such works.
