The inscription identifies the gentleman as the condottiere Ludovico Vistarini of Lodi who served initially with Francesco Sforza II and, on his death, undr the Emperor Charles V. Piazza’s portraits, inspired by Romanino’s work, tend to focus on a psychological definition of the sitter, yet in this instance the focus is on the display of authority and military prowess symbolised by the helmet on which Vistarini rests his right hand.
