In 1537 Gaudenzio Ferrari moved from Vercelli to Milan, where he became immensely successful. In a room peopled only with women, maidservants in shimmering attire make St. Anne comfortable, bring her a light meal and bathe the baby Mary. The stiffness in some of them is a result of intervention by his assistants. The picture formerly graced the altar of the Cavalcabò Trivulzio Chapel, set amid frescoes completing its significance.
