Madonna and Child with St. John the Baptist and St. Jerome

Callisto Piazza

Born to a family of painters from Lodi, Callisto is recorded as working in Brescia from 1524 to 1529. This altarpiece comes from the church of San Francesco in that city. His style at the time, showing an interest in realism apparent in the vibrant head of St. Jerome, was influenced by the warm painting of Romanino, Dosso Dossi and Titian. His signature, “CALIXTVS LAVDENSIS”, is in the scroll next to the angel seated between the lamb and the lion, symbolising St. John the Baptist and St. Jerome.
