The Moretto’s Madonna in Glory, a mature work, reflects the new direction taken by religious painting in the mid-16th century, with its call for a solemn stage arranged on successive levels by virtue of an austere architectural setting and for a palette of uniform, understated sobriety. The painting clearly reveals the influence of Brescia-born artist Vincenzo Foppa, several of whose works are on display here in Brera.
