This altarpiece by Batoni, who was chosen to paint it on the advice of Cardinal Angelo Maria Querini, the Hieronymite order’s patron, is a classic example of his monumental, academic style inspired by Classicism. Probably commissioned between 1738 and 1740, its delicate palette points to a close study of the work of Raphael, a typical feature of Batoni’style at this time.
