The figures, whose monumental aspects is magnified by being seen from below, inhabit a solemn yet colourful architectural setting, but it is not an enclosed space. Round windows and arches allow the light to flood in, breathing life into the atmosphere. A goldfinch alights on the tie-rod of one of the arches, and sky and trees can be seen between the saints. The strict perspective, shadow and complex drapery all point to the artist visiting Lombardy and to the influence of Bramante’s work on his style.
