Painted in the spring of 1942, this work is one of a series of still-lifes entitled Guéridon, or round “occasional” table, with typically flattened spaces peopled by geometric objects reduced to evenly coloured shapes defined in strong contrast, from the red ochres of the furniture to the icy green-blue tones dominated by a cloudy sky. Shown at the Palais des Papes in Avignon in 1947, the picture probably came into the possession of Jesi family some time before 1960.
