Raising of Lazarus

Ludovico Mazzolino

This is one of the last works by a painter celebrated for his unconventional imagination. Here Lazarus emerges from a cistern rather than from the more customary cave, and the artifice of balancing the serious aspect of the apostles on the right with the almost vulgar gestures of the group on the left, where one figure holds his nose while another dons his spectacles is almost shocking. The palette is soft and nuanced while the attention to detail serves to enliven the narrative.
