Beheading of St. John the Baptist

Pellegrino Tibaldi (Pellegrino Pellegrini)

This painting, with a Visitation now in the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche in Urbino and a Birth of St. John the Baptist now in a private collection, may come from a predella possibly attached to an altarpiece depicting Baptism of Christ in Sant’Agostino in Ancona or an altarpiece depicting St. John the Baptist in the church of San Ciriaco near Palazzo Ferretti in Ancona. Tibaldi’s elongated figures reveal his interest in Emilian painting, particularly in the work of Parmigianino.
