As part of the project of the Mic “Cento opere svelate” the work was destined to Palazzo Costabili in Ferrara.
Garofalo, who sets his Crucifixion in a rarefied atmosphere, invariably depicts figures of sophisticated beauty and evocative landscape, his refined palette revealing the influence of the painters Dosso Dossi and Giorgione. The Cross stands out in the centre of a sweeping landscape, with Mary Magdalene at its feet and the grieving Virgin and St. John on either side. On the right we see St. Vitus the martyr, the patron saint of the church for which the altarpiece was originally painted.
