This panel is one of the loftiest achievements of a painter who has been called “the Raphael of Ferrara”. Raphael’s influence can be seen in the tranquil rhythm and the monumental forms. The group of figures crowds into the foreground, rigidly divided on either side of Christ and his mother. The clumsiness is redeemed by the luminous landscape, by the sophisticated juxtaposition of colours, such as the yellow and blue of the figure on the far left, and by such natural details as Christ’s icy pallor.
