The illusion of space in this picture is created by the intersection of coloured areas juxtaposed on the basis of dense tonal relations. Composition owes a huge debt to the figurative models of Braque and Picasso, but it also sets out to conjure up the pure, textural colours of the Italian medieval tradition. Emilio Jesi bought the painting in the late 1950s after the artist’s one-man show at the Galleria del Naviglio in Milan.
