Salviati painted this picture for the aristocratic convent of Dominican nuns of the Observance dedicated to the Corpus Domini while in Venice from 1539 to 1541. He may have painted the main figures himself, leaving those in the background to his assistant Giuseppe Porta. Salviati mingles figures displaying a strength worthy of Michelangelo with a Mannerist palette, yet with an elegance reminiscent of Bronzino and a new feel for colour acquired in Venice.
