This bust of one of Italian Neoclassicism’s leading poets is all that remains of a monument dedicated to his memory in the loggia of the Palazzo di Brera. The cenotaph, cast in bronze by Luigi Manfredini, included a stele with an allegorical figure of Poetry in mourning. It was designed by the painter Pelagio Palagi and modelled by Sangiorgio, who was already renowned for his imposing bronze six-horse chariot depicting Minerva of Peace set over the Arco della Pace.
