This picture, painted while Bordon was working in Milan, is a work of the loftiest artistic quality with its lyrical nocturnal setting. The depiction of Jesus’ monumental nude body hangs on the wall alongside the pale, lifeless body of Christ depicted in Lorenzo Lotto’s Pietà, which was painted at more or less the same time.
