This is the second of two concerts that look at the composer Arnold Schönberg and the challenges of Modernity. Schönberg lived the first part of his life in the Vienna of Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Karl Kraus and Ludwig Wittgenstein. In 1933, with the Nazis rise to power, he fled to Los Angeles, where he was at the centre of the intellectual created by the arrival of other émigrés including Thomas Mann, Salka and Berthold Viertel, Max Reinhart and Bertolt Brecht. Across the street from Schönberg lived George Gershwin, and Harpo Marx, Orson Welles and Charlie Chaplin were often guests. The first concert was streamed live on Brera Plus Tuesday 28 September, 2021, and featured the music Schönberg wrote in Vienna and Berlin, along with that of his contemporaries. This concert looks at his search for an authentic music, without unnecessary ornament.
