Silver dollar club

Afro Basaldella

This painting, with its nuanced tones and sophisticated textural feel, already belonged to the Jesi family when it was shown at the 1956 Venice Biennale, where Afro won the prize for best Italian painter. There is no certain explanation for the title of the picture, but it is thought that the “silver dollar” shown in the pale circle in the middle may allude to the world of jazz, of which artists were especially fond in the 1950s.
