Portrait of a Man

Filippo Mazzola

We do not know the identity of the person depicted in this, one of Mazzola’s finest portraits, but the meticulous treatment of detail (down to the sitter’s beard, the boil on his nose and the thin strip of fur on his collar) and the raw facial features, with no attempt made to prettify them, tell us that the artist was a diligent student of Flemish painting.
