Portrait of Lucio Foppa

Giovanni Ambrogio Figino

Lomazzo’s pupil Ambrogio Figino was famous for his portraits and this full-figure work is one of his finest, adopting a composition developed by Titian and combining attention to the sitter’s features with a meticulous rendering of detail, from his lace collar to his embroidered shoes, and with a detailed depiction of his armour, the tools of his trade, thanks to the way the artist handles light. The sitter’s extremely sophisticated weaponry may be traced back to the armouries operating in Milan in the late 16th century.
